Brown University’s Department of Africana Studies/Rites and Reason Theatre is one of the most highly-regarded African Diaspora programs in the world at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Located in the historic Churchill House, it is a gathering place for field-defining experts. Rites and Reason Theatre, the oldest continually-performing Black Theatre in New England, has been producing ground-breaking artistic work for over 50 years.
A. The Department’s logo features the Me-We, a stacked totem representing its twin focus areas. The upper totem represents the mind, intelligence and reason. The lower totem represents the mask, performance and rites.
B. The visual identity of the Department makes use of warm earth tones and natural fiber textures that weave together the knowledge of past, present, and future.
